I received 36 blood transfusions over the course of my emergency treatment and recovery. That is 36 people who took one hour of their time to save the life of someone they would never have a chance to know. I would not be alive today if it was not for these people, who I do not know and will never meet.
Without that anonymous group of people who gave a part of themselves for me, I never would have been able to achieve my dreams.
According to the Red Cross, the 4th of July Weekend is one of the most difficult times of year to collect blood. Every 4th of July I think about the other patients like me who may need blood this weekend and the days that follow. If there had not been donors on the 4th of July holiday in 2004, I would not be alive today. I am writing to ask everyone who is eligible to donate to give this weekend – it only takes about an hour and it truly does save lives. I am proof of that. I know that 4th of July is one of those holidays that often means a weekend full of cookouts and parties, but I am asking those who are able to please find just one hour of time this weekend to give blood. There are thousands of people like me who have been saved by blood donations, and thousands more who will depend on the generosity of a blood donor for survival in the coming weeks.
For their sake, please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to schedule a donation appointment.
You are needed to save lives.
